Mountain biking to Chisapani

- incrediblemountains

A longer weekend calls for an over-night bike ride to Chisapani, a small town in Shivapuri National park, where views of majestic mountains are well worth grueling uphill climb.

The ride starts from chabahil towards jorpati via bouddha. From jorpati we take a left turn to reach Sundarijal, a tiny town at the base of Shivapuri's east flank. The town comes alive every weekend with hundreds of picnickers who come to see the waterfalls. We dodge the horde with the detour just before we reach the town, and roll down graveled roads through the Melamchi Project Gate, and the uphill climb begins pretty much all the way to the top.

A short pedal up on rocky trails brings us to the checkpoint of Shivapuri National Park and then into the woods. After some 5 km on gravel, we reach Mulkharka. Sadly, we'll have missed Sundarijal's famous reservoir on the detour. If you feel like it, you can carry your bike or lock your bike in Mulkharka and walked down about five minutes on step to reach the reservoir.

Head back up to Mulkharka and prepare for the 22 km of dirt to Chisapani. The ride is both pleasant and challenging, with a quaint village in route. An unremarkable turn a short distance away brings the first sight of mountains in their absolute glory. A little while later when you reach only junction, take a sharp left, after which there is no chance to get lost or confused. You'll soon reach a small but scenic lake called Dhap. Take a quick break here as Chisapani is not very far.

The first sight of Chisapani is as intriguing as it is sad. Tilted buildings damaged by earthquake stand precariously against a backdrop of glistening mountains, which include Manaslu Ganesh, Langtang, Dorje lakpa and even Everest to the far-east, making for quite a bizarre view.

Once in town head over to one of the safer hotels, you can select and stay.  After a full day of uphill, pamper yourself with a few glasses of local brew and sittan on the rooftop. Watch the hues of a gorgeous sunset against the enormous mountain ranges, and before you know it you will find yourself under a million shining stars. Savour the moment but head to bed early because you don't want to miss spectacular sinrise the next morning. After breakfast, descend the same path or roll down to Sankhu on trails past Chisapani.
